Six Reasons to Switch to Libro.fm

Not so long ago, Libro.fm asked if I wanted to become an affiliate for them, complete with Libro.fm promo code, and I jumped at the chance! I was not in any way required or asked to write a blog post about them, but I wanted to. This post can act as a resource for anyone visiting my site to find out more about Libro.fm.

Libro are making waves in the bookish community, and with good reason. Not only are they an incredible alternative to Amazon-owned audiobook platforms, they listen and act on criticism for the better. On Juneteenth, they donated all audiobook sales to their 55 partnered Black-owned bookstores, a total of $67,462. They’re just doing good stuff, and I’m happy to represent them.

For every person who uses my link or my Libro.fm promo code ABREADS on a new monthly membership, I’ll earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thank you for your support!

So let’s dive in to the reasons why you should switch to Libro.fm for your audiobook needs!

1. Support an independent business

Look, it’s 2020. If you aren’t aware by now that Amazon is a greedy, exploitative corporation then you need to open your eyes. I completely understand that times are tight and Amazon is cheap, but if you can make switches in certain places, then you should. Audible is owned by Amazon, so if that’s what you currently use for your audiobooks, consider swapping to Libro.fm. Not only will you then support a small independent audiobook business, you’ll also…

2. Support independent bookshops

Libro.fm allows you to buy audiobooks directly through your local independent bookstore. You continue to put money back into your local economy and help local bookstores thrive. This is particularly important right now, as we adjust to life with the ongoing effects of COVID. You might not feel comfortable browsing your local bookstore yet, or it might not be an option if you’re shielding. But that’s okay, because you can purchase an audiobook through Libro.fm and still support your local indie that way. Win-win! Find their list of partner bookstores here. If you don’t see your local indie on the list, just email Libro.fm and they’ll set about partnering up with them!

3. Browse thousands of titles

There are so many ways to browse and find new audiobooks on Libro.fm. They have specially curated playlists such as Celebrating Trans Voices and New Fiction by Black Women. They have their bestseller lists if you want to know what’s trending. You can see top bookseller picks. Or simply browse by genre, of which they have MANY. You can also do a good old-fashioned search, either by book, author or narrator, if you have a favourite. Whatever you want, you’ll very likely find it, and I guarantee you’ll find plenty you didn’t know you wanted until now too.

4. Roll over your credits

Don’t have time to listen to an audiobook one month? Don’t worry, your credit won’t expire or disappear once the month is up. With your monthly $14.99 membership, you get one audiobook credit, and this can be used at any time. You can also use to it purchase audiobooks for others as gifts if you’re feeling super generous one month.

5. Get membership discounts

As well as your one monthly credit, your membership also grants you discounts on most other audiobooks in Libro.fm’s catalogue. This is great news if you’re an avid audiobook listener. 30% off an audiobook is not a discount to be sniffed at! And by the way, when you use my Libro.fm promo code to sign up for the monthly membership, you’ll get two audiobooks for the price of one in the first month! So that’s two credits instead of one for your first month with a $14.99 membership.

Please note that monthly membership is only available to US and Canadian residents. International folk can use Libro.fm for purchasing audiobook credits in bulk. See more here.

6. Own your audiobooks

Once you download an audiobook from Libro.fm, it’s yours. You own it DRM-free. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management, and DRM-free means you can listen to your audiobook any time, anywhere, on any device. Libro.fm is one of the few audiobook platforms that offer DRM-free audiobooks. The easiest way to listen to your audiobooks is to download the free app, but you can listen on your computer instead if you want. Find out how here.

7. Bonus borrowing tip

Don’t worry if right now you can’t afford an audiobook subscription or credits. I’m also an avid user of BorrowBox, my library’s audiobook platform. We all should be supporting our libraries too, and this is a great way to do it. Check your library’s website to see if they use BorrowBox, or any other audiobook borrowing service! You have access to the audiobook for FREE for a few weeks, and then you return it like you would any library book!

  1. This is a fab post covering just how great Libro.fm is! I’m very happy that the credits don’t expire or anything – I gifted myself a 3-month membership and I’m glad there’s no pressure on me to use up my remaining credits ASAP, haha. I’m looking forward to Libro.fm launching in the UK at some point!

I’d not heard of BorrowBox till you mentioned it. I use Overdrive for my library – I wonder if different books are available through each service ?

    1. Aw thanks Steph! I didn’t want to come off as a walking advert for them since I am an affiliate, but honestly they have such a great service I wanted a permanent post on my blog to highlight that! Fingers crossed for a UK launch soon!

I had no idea BorrowBox existed until someone on IG told me about it! I think different libraries use different services, and then each library just buys in titles as they would a physical copy!
